FORMATION OF SALT WATCHER LLC

Although I am a graduate of Penn State University, Registered Nurse and Certified Case Manager with over 25 years of experience in both the acute care and business management settings, I wasn’t aware that following a low sodium diet could be so complex.  I, like many of my colleagues over the years, have educated thousands of individuals on acceptable and non-acceptable foods for a low salt diet.  It was not until October 2002 when my father was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and I became involved in his care, that I learned exactly how difficult it really is to follow a low sodium diet.

Shopping at the grocery store and reading labels can be an overwhelming experience.  In our fast-paced society, with everything available in easy to prepare convenience packaging, nearly every item you pick up is loaded with salt or a sodium derivative.  Trying to find the sodium content of items that do not have labels can be difficult, but very important in your daily sodium calculation.

I resorted to the Internet and found large amounts of valuable information and products, which took hours of research.  Salt Watcher LLC was formed in March 2003 to provide a single site where comprehensive information about following a low salt diet could be obtained.  Salt Watcher LLC includes links to many national and governmental sites for educational information, as well as, practical and useful everyday hints, and advice obtained from actually following a low sodium diet, low sodium recipes and products.

Many of you visiting this site are doing so as a result of a recommendation by your Physician to follow a low sodium diet.  However, some of you may be doing so to help achieve the recommended daily sodium content established and released on February 11, 2004 by the Institute of Medicine.  On that date, the Institute of Medicine, which establishes the United States recommended levels of nutrients, lowered the recommended level from 2,400 mg of sodium/day to 1,500 mg of sodium/day for healthy younger adults.  Since blood pressure rises with age, the Institute of Medicine recommends 1,300 mg of sodium/day for those over 50 and 1,200 mg of sodium/day for those over 70.  Regardless of why you are looking to reduce your sodium intake, you must first educate yourself on salt and sodium and what foods contain this nutrient.  Salt Watcher can help you accomplish this.  Please browse the site and come back often as we are always adding new resources.  If you are unable to find what you are looking for regarding low sodium diets, please contact me at info@saltwatcher.com.  I will be happy to assist you in finding the resource.   To read recent press reports about SaltWatcher.com click here.
